Spectacular Barachois Inn, Rustico

OK - it's time to pull out some of the more impressive heritage buildings on Prince Edward Island.  Here is Barachois Inn located in Rustico.  The Inn is operated by Judy & Gary MacDonald and their family who offer the very best of Island hospitality in this historic home!!  The house was built by Joseph Gallant in 1880 and is located on Church Road in Rustico (don't get Rustico confused with North Rustico).  To the north of the house, across Church Road, is St. Augustine Catholic Church built in 1838, and to the right is Rustico Bay.
The Barachois Inn was built in the Mansard or Second Empire style.
For more information about Barachois Inn go to their website -  http://barachoisinn.com/

Below is MacDonald House, a new 4-unit building to accommodate more guests at Barachois Inn.  I prepared the drawings for this new building in the same style as the main house but in 2-storeys.  The house has a main entry foyer to the rear with a library in the middle overlooking the gardens.  There are two accommodation units on each floor.  The building was constructed by Greenleaf Construction in Clyde River - the workmanship is excellent.

Howlan School

This old school is located at 647 Howlan Road, Rte. 143 - just down the road from Rte. 2 and St. Anthony's Catholic Church.
The old school has stood firm since the early 1970s when school amalgamation began and carried through to the end of that decade.
I don't know much about this old school, however, it's large structure with multi-pane windows and eave returns would indicate it was built amoung the earlier schools - possibly 1870's.
The windows are very large 6-over-6 style, single hung style.
Note the eave returns.

The Old St. Michael's Rectory, Iona

I was traveling again in eastern PEI.  I was through Iona and spotted this lovely old house - known as "Seven Hills Tourist Home".  It is located adjacent to St. Michael's Catholic Church and was once the Parish Rectory.  It was built around 1870 and occupied by resident priests from 1884-1986.  (cf. A Faith Walk: Diocese of Charlottetown by Revd Art O'Shea)
The house  is center gable style with an elaborate window in the gable featuring a trapezoid top.  The house features a verandah, side square bay and much eave and verandah trim.
The house is listed with kijiji for summer rental and has interior photos - check it out...

Located near this house is Red Lane Gardens who specialize in growing day lilies.  The above photos are a few from my garden - they're amazing!!  Check out their website... http://www.redlanegardens.com/Growing_Daylilies.html

King George Hall, Porthill

I was out to see St. James Anglican Church reno this evening on my way home from western PEI.  This Hall is located between the church and the intersection which takes you out to Yeo House ( at Green Park ) or into Tyne Valley.  Great building!
